This week’s knick knack is my tiny GemFlex camera. This was one of my father’s many cameras I found in our attic when I was a young girl. I initially wanted it because it was a cool little camera and it was my Dad’s. It was a small thing, but it was a connection to my deceased father. I would love to have heard more about this camera from him and find out where it went with him. It is one of my most treasured items.

This week’s knick knack is our Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM, if you will) tree topper. Our family made this guy in 2011 and he has looked over us with his noodley appendages ever since. When there isn’t a tree for him to adorn, he sits on a shelf and looks over us from there.

This week’s knick knack is my wooden snowman ornament. This snowman was a gift from my mother more than 25 years ago. I look forward to it adorning my Christmas tree every year. It is a fun ornament. It has a little string that makes the snowman’s arms and legs move when pulled. It looks like he is jumping.

This week’s knick knack is another one of my cherished Hummel figurines. It was made in the 1970’s and is titled boy girl ‘surprise’. I adore the craftsmanship of all these figurines, but I find this one especially sweet. Their little faces are so innocent. When I watched the most recent episode of Sons of Anarchy, Blood Roses, I thought of this figurine when I saw the Hummel figurine lying on the ground on the show. Both figurines are of a boy and girl and Hummel figurines make me think of innocence. I think the show was trying to show lost innocence when it showed the figurine. I really liked that touch and felt a Hummel figurine was the perfect choice. It also gave me an excuse to showcase yet another Hummel figurine.

This week’s knick knack is not technically a knick knack and it is not in my house. It is Great Grandpa’s hat. Since Great grandpa’s passing, Great Grandma has had this hat displayed on her TV stand. Great Grandpa always had on a hat when he was out. He wore a baseball cap that was covered with pins he had collected over the years. The pins tell his story. He had a flag pin to show his patriotism. Great Grandpa loved his country and loved to show it. He made sure the flag hung from his house every day of his life and treated it with respect. Other pins give clues about a local eatery he frequented (Old Man River), his hobbies (a camper) and places he has visited (Intercourse, PA). Each pin on his hat tells something about the man who wore the hat. The hat itself is from the place he worked at for years. When I went in search of a photo of Great Grandpa wearing this hat, I did not have one of him in this exact hat, but the hat he has on is adorned with these same pins. The hat he is wearing in the photo now belongs to his great grandson. Great Grandpa was a kind and gentle man loved by everyone and I love seeing his hat when we visit Great Grandma.

This week’s knick knack is a Totoro wind-up toy. This toy was bought for the boy years ago when he was really into watching the movie “My Neighbor Totoro” over and over. When we recently moved his room, the toy was found (in its original box) tucked away in his closet. He did not want it so I snatched it up. Totoro is now freed from his box and on display.
